Bluetooth 5.1 Specifications Officially Announced

6 min read

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) has announced a new direction-finding feature for the Bluetooth 5.1 standard, which will greatly improve the technology’s location services.

This new feature allows devices to track the direction of a Bluetooth signal, allowing for the development of proximity and positioning systems which are accurate down to the “centimetre-level”.

Bluetooth 5.1-based proximity solutions will allow users to find devices with Bluetooth tags, and positioning systems using Bluetooth technology, this will allow for the refinement of indoor positioning systems and real-time locating services.

Bluetooth SIG announced that Bluetooth 5.1 has been delivered to developers, and the most noteworthy new change is the “direction finding” feature. The Bluetooth organization hopes to replace Wi-Fi’s auxiliary positioning role with the 5.1 standards, which will help scenes that require location services such as GPS, including determining distances and even precise locations.

With the advent of Bluetooth 5.0 back in 2016, a number of improvements were ushered in, including faster data transfers and a longer range. Additionally, the upgrade meant that wireless headphones could now communicate over the more power-conservative Bluetooth Low Energy, which translates into longer battery life.

With Bluetooth 5.1 arriving on the scene, we could soon see improved indoor navigation, allowing people to more easily find their way around supermarkets, airports, museums, and even cities.
