Command Prompt (CMD or Terminal in Linux ) is one of the most powerful and effective tools in an operating system. Command Prompt, also known as cmd.exe or cmd (after its executable file name), is the command-line interpreter on Windows NT.
It is important to note that the commands in Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP are called CMD commands or Command Prompt commands, and the commands in Windows 98/95 and MS-DOS are called DOS commands. CMD very useful in a sense that it’s used to automate task through batch files and scripts.
How To Access Command Prompt
Command-line tools run at the prompt of the Cmd.exe command interpreter. To open Command Prompt, click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK. Check out the list of useful command tips and tricks below:
#1 Check Disk Utility
This utility is used to diagnose a Hard disk drive (HDD) or USB flash drives’ integrity. It can also repair major issues such as directory errors, or bad sectors. The tool can be accessed in the command prompt panel using CHKDSK command. But there are other parameters you can use to achieve an expected result depending on the issue you face. For instance, you can use chkdsk D: /f to fix your drive errors.
#2 Show Hidden Files on Storage Device
Have you ever faced an issue whereby you copy a file from a friends computer with a disk drive, insert it into yours and you find out all your files are hidden? Attrib command is the best tool to rectify such issue. It is mostly used to show hidden files on a storage device or to reveals our actual files hidden by a shortcut malware. Let us assume the malware infected Pendrive is the letter ( f: ). You can enter this at the command prompt interface or copy and paste it without the quotes; “Attrib -h -r -s /s /d F:*.*“.
#3 Repair Master Boot Records
This command is basically used to solve corrupted boot sectors just in case startup repair option doesn’t work in the System Recovery Options. The command used is bootrec /RebuildBcd.
#4 Flush DNS
Anytime you connect to the internet, your DNS cache stores the IP address of web servers containing web pages visited. At times, when the web server changes you will need to clear the DNS cache to have an accurate view of the web page. You can easily use this command to clear DNS “ipconfig /flushdns“. After executing the command, the system returns with the message. “Windows IP configuration successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache. ”
#5 Repair Windows Files
The command sfc /scannow is used to solve corrupted windows files and it takes between 8 to 15 minutes for the repair processes to be completed.
#6 Restore Default Power Plans on Windows
This can be handy if you have a missing default power plan and you would like to restore it or would like to reset all default power plans back to their default settings; powercfg -restoredefaultschemes.
